About

Shai Kremer

Israeli, born 1974

Shai Kremer is an Israeli photographer whose work has earned widespread recognition for its thought-provoking exploration of complex themes. His Perception series investigates how individual psychology subtly influences the way we interpret and engage with the powerful, mysterious imagery he creates in his studio. Kremer’s earlier works include the large-scale Concrete Abstract series, which captures the reconstruction of the World Trade Center site through multiple image overlays, spanning from 2001 to 2012. His 2010 series, Notes from the Edges, offers views of New York’s perimeter, emphasizing the contrast between destruction and renewal. In this series, Kremer explores lesser-known landscapes where urban decay begins to merge with nature. His earlier series, Infected Landscape and Fallen Empires, examine contested territories throughout Israel, where the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has left a profound impact on both the land and the psyche of its inhabitants.

Born in Israel, Shai Kremer now lives and works in New York. His work has been included in solo and group exhibitions worldwide, such as Exposed: Voyeurism, Surveillance, and the Camera at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and Tate Modern, London, in 2010; Looking In, Looking Out: The Window in Art at the Israel Museum in 2010; Reality Check at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, in 2008; the 2007 Guangzhou Photo Biennale in Canton, China; Loaded Landscape at the Museum of Contemporary Photography, Chicago, IL, in 2007; Engagement-Contemporary Photography at the Israel Art Museum, Jerusalem, in 2007; and Disengagement at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art, Israel, in 2006. Kremer’s photographs are part of prominent collections, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Israel Art Museum, Tel Aviv Museum of Art, and the Museum of Contemporary Photography, Chicago. Two monographs of his work have been published: Fallen Empires (2011) and Infected Landscape: Israel, Broken Promised Land (2008), both by Dewi Lewis Publishing.
