The Robert Koch Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of Ljubodrag Andric’s INDIA series, expounding on the artist’s ongoing oeuvre of minimalistic and texturally amplified photographic architectural abstractions. Andric’s masterful sense of place and light, gives breath to works precise in their reductive compositional dialect and lushness of detail. By providing universally recognizable entry points to the work such as walls, steps, windows and other facades, and reducing the image to it’s bare essence Andric invites the viewer to interpret the work on a deeply personal and meditative level.

As poignantly expressed by curator and writer Marta Braun, “Positioned firmly between photography and painting, Ljubodrag Andric’s pictures are not quite either. Simultaneously recognizable as both representations and colourful abstractions, they are contemporary, particularly brilliant expressions of the future of lens-based art. Their genesis is in a camera, a purely mechanical apparatus: at the push of a button a shutter opens and closes letting in light through a lens to trigger a reaction of a photocell…The results, however, make us forget their mechanistic foundations. Created as images on a screen, they have been enlarged to match the scale of as the walls on which they are hung, their magnitude overwhelming us with pools of shimmering colour that transcend the purely automatic in favour of a harmonious formal organization of light, pigment and texture.”

For over thirty years, Ljubodrag Andric’s work has focused on re-contextualizing the urban landscape. Born in Belgrade in 1965 to a family of artists—his mother an actress, his father a writer, and his brother a painter—Andric began concentrating on photography at the age of sixteen. In 1988, while studying literature in Belgrade, Andric held his first exhibition at the Modern Art Gallery in Belgrade, addressing the relationship between space and architecture, a theme central to his visual exploration.

In 2002, Andric relocated to Toronto, where he currently lives and works. In 2005, re-nationalized as a Canadian citizen. Ljubodrag Andric’s work has been exhibited at Chaumont-Photo-sur-Loire, France (2023-2024); the Museum of Fine Arts in Le Locle, Switzerland (2017); the Fondazione Querini Stampalia in Venice (2016); and the Triennale di Milano (2016), among others. In 2016, Skira published Ljubodrag Andric: Works 2008-2016.
