The Robert Koch Gallery is pleased to present Memory City, a collaborative exhibition of works by husband and wife duo, Alex Webb and Rebecca Norris Webb. Featuring work from their monograph of the same title released in 2014 by Radius Books, Memory City, is a photographic exploration of Rochester, New York, the long time home of Eastman Kodak, which went bankrupt in 2012 and for many marked the end of the photographic film era. This rich body of work examines the social, economic, and psychological impact the closing of Eastman Kodak left on the town of Rochester, New York. Eastman Kodak refused to embrace the market shift from analog to digital, which ultimately led to its demise.
Magnum photographer Alex Webb is best known for his eloquent street photography. Webb has published numerous monographs, including The Suffering of Light, a quintessential survey of thirty years of his color work; Alex Webb and Rebecca Norris Webb: Memory City; and Violet Isle: A Duet of Photographs from Cuba, with wife and creative partner Rebecca Norris Webb. Alex Webb became a full member of Magnum Photos in 1979. His work has been exhibited widely, including at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Walker Art Center. Webb has been the recipient of numerous awards, including a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2007. Webb’s work is represented in prestigious museum collections such as The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; and the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, among others.
Originally a poet, Rebecca Norris Webb has published five photography books: My Dakota, an elegy for her brother who died unexpectedly; Alex Webb and Rebecca Norris Webb: Memory City; The Glass Between Us; Violet Isle: A Duet of Photographs from Cuba (with Alex Webb); and Alex Webb and Rebecca Norris Webb on Street Photography and the Poetic Image. Her work has been exhibited at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; the Cleveland Museum of Art; and the George Eastman House among other institutions. A solo exhibition of My Dakota: Photographs by Rebecca Norris Webb was recently on view through August 16th, 2015 at the Cleveland Museum of Art.
