Concerned with spirituality, visual metaphors and the physical world, Linda Foard Roberts‘ large format photographs explore the viewer’s relationship with life’s transformations. Roberts prefers 5 x 7 negatives and old lenses, which help connect her work to the past by producing visible imperfections in her images. The black-and-white subjects of her Passage and Grounded series, whether the wrinkled hands of her father or the blossoms of a young tree, evoke growth, aging and the changing of seasons. Roberts’ subtle symbols stir our subconscious and act as mementos for transformative life cycles filled with personal meanings both for the artist and for viewers. Additionally, the oval format prints from Passage recall the antiquated portrait photography of the 1800s, which further highlights the history of the medium and the passage of centuries. By adhering to past photographic traditions but taking from her 21st-century surroundings, Roberts creates timeless photographs and universal themes.

Linda Foard Roberts holds an MFA from Arizona State University, and her work is in the permanent collections of Bank of America and the Mint Museums in Charlotte, NC. For five years, she was the Executive Director for The Light Factory Photographic Arts Center in Charlotte, NC.
