Lynn Geesaman
American, 1938—2020
Lynn Geesaman is known for her images of elaborate topiary gardens, canals, and dramatic landscapes employing unusual diffusion techniques that emphasized an imaginative and psychological interpretation of nature. In 1960, Lynn Geesaman earned a degree in mathematic and physics from Wellesley College. It was some twenty years later that she took up photography when an interest in gardens led to research and travel in England, France, Belgium, Italy and Germany. Lynn Geesaman is held in many prestigious collections, including the Art Institute of Chicago; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; the Philadelphia Museum of Art; the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York. Among the many honors she has received are the Minnesota State Arts Board Fellowship and the Arts Midwest/NEA Regional Visual Arts Fellowship Award. Geesaman’s monographs are Poetics of Place (Umbrage Editions, 1998), Gardenscapes (Aperture, 2003) and Hazy Lights & Shadows (Husson, 2007).
