Josef Bartuška was a Czech artist, photographer, and filmmaker associated with the avant-garde movement in interwar Czechoslovakia. Born in České Budějovice, Bartuška was a founding member of the Linie Group, which sought to explore modernist experimentation through poetic abstraction and subjective expression. His multidisciplinary approach spanned experimental photography, typographic design, and film, reflecting his interest in constructivist and surrealist influences.
Bartuška’s innovative work often challenged traditional artistic boundaries, emphasizing dynamic compositions and nontraditional visual techniques. His films and photomontages explored abstract form and expressive possibilities, while his graphic designs demonstrated a keen sensitivity to structure and visual rhythm.
Today, Josef Bartuška is recognized as a significant contributor to Czech modernism, with his works held in collections such as the Moravian Gallery in Brno and the National Gallery in Prague.
