About

Mário Cravo Neto

Brazilian, 1947—2009

Mario Cravo Neto was born in the city of Salvador, Bahia in 1947 and trained as a sculptor under his father Mario Cravo Junior. He studied photography in Berlin and New York at the Art Student League under Jack Keueger for two years, and has since worked in staged black and white photography about the Afro-Brazilian culture. His precise formal and technical attributes brings out the sculptural qualities of his subject matter while his emphasis on texture renders it tactile. Cravo Neto’s work has been published in over a dozen monographs, and is in numerous public collections worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; and the Museu de Arte Moderna, Rio de Janeiro.
