Michael Wolf, Tokyo Compression | Final Cut
Essay by Christian Schüle

This is the fourth and final edition of the classic photography book series Tokyo Compression. Michael Wolf continues his exploration of the density of population, capturing commuters constrained in the glass and steel of the over-crowded Tokyo subway cars. As with previous series, Wolf uses a 'no exit' composition, trapping the gaze of the viewer within the frame, creating arresting tension, and highlighting his subjects vulnerability.
